Faculty Spotlight: Dan Burns

For over four decades, Mr. Burns has been shaping young minds and bodies through the joy of physical education. With 41 years of experience as a PE teacher, 33 years as a basketball referee, and a lifelong passion for sports, his influence in athletics and academics runs deep.

Mr. Burns began his journey at St. Bonaventure University, where he played basketball and baseball while earning his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. From there, he spent 22 years teaching public and Catholic schools in Florida, near Orlando and New Smyrna Beach. In 2010, he joined TFS, where he has remained a beloved fixture for the past 15 years.

What fuels his passion for teaching? It’s simple—seeing children have fun. In a world where the pressure to succeed can sometimes overshadow the joy of childhood, Mr. Burns believes in creating a space where children can just be children. His classes are filled with laughter and movement, ensuring students learn about physical fitness and enjoy every moment.

With five or six PE classes a day, Mr. Burns dedicates his time to making lessons engaging and exciting. Over the years, one of the biggest challenges he has noticed is the changing ability of students to listen and focus in PE class. In today’s fast-paced world, where everything needs to be done quickly, he sees a shift in how students process and problem-solve. Yet, he continues to adapt and inspire, fostering an environment where students can slow down and truly enjoy being in the moment.

As Mr. Burns reflects on his time at TFS, he sees it as a blessing—professionally and personally. The school has deepened his faith, and he appreciates the community TFS offers. His ultimate hope is that his love and appreciation for sports and physical activity will have a lasting impact on the many students and colleagues he’s had the privilege to teach and work with.

With a legacy built on passion, dedication, and joy, Mr. Burns continues to make a difference, one fun-filled PE class at a time.
